2025 ExCEL Award Winner

The ExCEL Award – Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership – is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, leaders in their schools, and who demonstrate a strong commitment to community service. This year Tri-County has selected Wyatt Westervelt as our local winner.

Wyatt Westervelt is a student whose dedication, leadership, and diverse talents set him apart both in and out of the classroom. Known for balancing a wide range of activities, Wyatt demonstrates a genuine commitment to personal growth, teamwork, and service to his school and community.

Athletically, Wyatt shines on the golf course, where his discipline and competitive spirit are evident. His involvement in the arts is equally impressive. As an enthusiastic member of the choir, he contributes his vocal talent to group performances and has also showcased his abilities through solos and ensemble competitions. His participation in One-Act Play further reflects his creativity and willingness to take on new challenges.

Beyond the arts and athletics, Wyatt is deeply engaged in academic and leadership pursuits. He has competed in Envirothon, demonstrating a commitment to environmental science and teamwork. As a Peer Helper, he supports fellow students, offering guidance and fostering a positive school environment. His leadership extends to student government as well—Wyatt has served as both President and Vice President of his class, roles that highlight his responsibility, initiative, and ability to motivate others. His selection to attend multiple leadership conferences shows the trust his school places in his character and potential.

Wyatt’s dedication to service is also evident through his work during Community Service Day, where he contributes his time and energy to improving the community around him.

Golf Coach, English Teacher, and One Act Play Director, Melissa Thompson had this to say about Wyatt. “Wyatt is active in several school programs that show his dedication and character.

He is a committed member of the Northern Freeze Varsity Golf Team, where he shows good sportsmanship, focus, and a steady drive to grow as an athlete. This year, he also joined the Tri-County One-Act Play. Even though the season hasn’t started yet, he has already shown enthusiasm and responsibility, and he is ready to take on new challenges.

What truly stands out about Wyatt is the kind of person he is. He is thoughtful, caring, and supportive of the people around him. His positive attitude makes him someone others enjoy working with, and his quiet leadership sets a strong example for his peers.”

In every area he pursues—whether performing on stage, serving his class, competing academically, or giving back—Wyatt Westervelt exemplifies well-rounded excellence. His blend of talent, leadership, and heart makes him an outstanding role model and a valued member of his school community.

Wyatt has submitted materials to the Minnesota State High School League and will be judged against other students in our region. The selected students will be recognized on 45TV during the broadcast of the 2026 winter tournaments. Those selected for our region will also participate in an on-court award ceremony during the Class AA championship game of the Girls Basketball State Tournament in March.
