CHOIR UPDATES
Congratulations, to Jaxon Klegstad who was recently accepted into the American Choral Director’s Association of Minnesota State 4-5-6 grade Boys Honor Choir. Each academic year, six special honor choir projects are organized to provide enriched singing opportunities for students in these grade levels: State 4-5-6 Boys and Girls; State 7-8 TTB and SSA; and State 9-10 SSAA and SATB.  Over 2400 students audition each year for placement into the honor choir program with over 800 selected. Jaxon Klegstad, a 6th grade student from Tri-County, was one of the 115 accepted into the 2017 State 4-5-6 Boys Honor Choir.
Accepted students from both the Girls Honor Choir and the Boys Honor Choir work on their own and with their respective school choir director(s) to prepare and memorize six songs for an all-day festival concert on May 6, 2017. The performance will be held at St. Andrew’s Church in Mahtomedi, MN.  Jaxon’s music teacher is, Sara Carpenter.
The director for the Boys 4-5-6 Honor Choir is, Ruth E. Dwyer. Ruth E. Dwyer is internationally recognized as a treble youth and children’s choir specialist and Kodály educator. Tri-County Choir Excels at Choir Contests! The Tri-County High School Choir, which consists of students in grades 7-12, participated at the MSHSL (Minnesota State High School League) Large Group Choir Contests on March 13, at Hallock.  There they performed two SATB pieces: “Loch Lomond” arranged by Jonathan Quick - an a capella Category 2 piece; and “Set Down Servant” a spiritual arranged by Robert Shaw.
Choirs can choose which category of difficulty in which they would like to perform, ranging from category 1 (which is the most difficult)  to category 3 (the least difficult).  There are three judges that critique the choir on the following categories: Tone Quality, Intonation, Rhythm, Balance/Blend, Technique, Interpretation/Musicianship, Diction, and Other Performance Factors.  The most you can earn for each category is 5 points, with a total of 40 being a perfect score.  The Tri-County High School Choir earned the following scores: 36, 37, and 38.  In order to earn a Superior Rating and receive a trophy, two out of three of the judges scores need to be above 35 points, which Tri-County’s scores exceeded. Some of the comments they received from the judges were : “Superb tone!”; “Nice rich sound!”; “What a wonderful performance!”; “You’re attention to the director was awesome!”; “Rhythm was great!”; “Nice vowels”; “Excellent dynamic contrast!”; “You told a great story with each piece, BRAVO!”; “You look like you enjoy singing”; “Good selection of literature”.
The Tri-County High School represented the Tri-County School very well, and should be extremely proud of how well they performed
INSTRUMENTAL UPDATES
Instrumental Ensemble Students do well at contest! Twelve Tri-County Band members traveled to Stephen for Instrumental Ensemble contests on Tuesday, March 21st.  The Clarinet quartet (Brita Swenson, Kylie Shetler, Emma Wollin, and Hailley Anderson), trumpet quartet (McKenzee Berg, Morgan Lindgren, Keaton Klegstad, and Trevor Johnson), and the trombone/baritone quartet (Naomi Budziszewski, Zach Undeberg, Abby Kautzman, and Courtnie Foss) all earned superior ratings. Their efforts will help improve the abilities of the entire band and help develop future leaders who will continue to strive for excellence in the band program.  All these students worked hard and played their best and they represented Tri-County very well.
